As a child in Vancouver, Canada, I was fascinated with pregnancy, childbirth, and newborns. Before long, my love of babies turned into a love of children. After an adolescence spent working closely with children, I went on to complete two bachelor’s degrees, the last in education. I began my teaching career in 2002, and shortly after, my cousin introduced me to her doula.
I was elated to discover that I could simultaneously pursue two of my passions, education and childbirth. I immediately signed up for the Birth Doula training through DONA (Doulas of North America) in early 2003. I continued my studies completing the Breastfeeding Counselor course through Douglas College Perinatal Education in 2004 and my Postpartum Doula training with DONA in 2005.
I continued to teach full-time and was blessed to be able to support families at nearly 20 births in 3 years. During this time, I worked with a variety of families including refugees, immigrants speaking little to no English, single parents, and parents with drug dependencies. I was also very fortunate to be at the births of the babes of close friends, including the birth of my lovely niece. These home and hospital births were each their own beautiful experiences. When full-time teaching and birth doula support began to fill my plate too full, I focused more on postpartum doula care. It was here that I experienced working with multiples, babies born before their estimated due date, NICU babes, babes who had lost their mothers, and others. It was wonderful to watch parents and their families change, grow, and thrive together.
In 2008, my own life changes brought about an opportunity to move to Paris, France. I jumped at the chance, and stayed in Paris for 5 years teaching at an international bilingual school. In June 2015, after 6 months in Hawaii and a year in Berkeley, California, my husband and I married and moved to his hometown of Grass Valley in Nevada County, California. In 2015, I became a Certified Educator of Infant Massage. It has been a pleasure sharing these skills with parents in my community.
In August 2016, my husband and I relocated back to Berkeley, CA. Currently, I am studying and on the road to earning a Master of Science in Midwifery degree at the Midwives College of Utah. In addition, I have been an apprentice midwife with The Midwives Childbirth Services out of Napa, CA, since September 2016. After much anticipation, in May 2018 we finally welcomed our own little peanut, a baby boy. As can be imagined, our lives are very full in many ways these days! In June 2019, my family moved to Santa Cruz, CA where I continue to welcome the opportunity to support pregnant people and their families with my passion for doula care, photography, and all things surrounding the miracle of birth.
